This battery is expensive. I could have bought 3 normal!? lead acid batteries for the price that I paid for only one Optima battery. Why did I do that? I have a 1951 Ford that had a 6 volt system when it was new. I restored it and left it as original as possible. My current lead acid battery is 5 years old. It was leaking and causing corrosion on both battery terminals as well as eating the paint off my battery holder. I participate in a few old car restoration chats. Many, many of the other folks that have tried the 6 volt Optima assured me that I would not be sorry that I spent 3 times more money and I should go ahead a purchase this battery.I bit the bullet, so to speak, and ordered the battery. I had already cleaned my cables and repainted my battery holder while waiting for the battery to arrive. I strapped it in with bungie cords and turned the key. I spins the engine as fast as a 12 volt. The car had been setting long enough for some of the gasoline to evaporate out of the carburator. With the old battery, I normally squirted some starter fluid down the carb before even attempting to start it. I just wanted to see if this battery is a great as I have been told. The only thing that I can find to complain about is the size of the battery. I had to make a holddown for it. I cut up some sheet metal, bent it and welded it together in about an hour. I am now a happy owner of a battery that I think that I can trust. I’m also told that it will never leak and ruin my cables or battery holder.Ron

Bought this battery for a 1931 Ford with 6 volt system.Had been using old style wet cell batteries, and always hated having to constantly check the levels, etc. Seemed very fragile too. Overcharge, and you boil it out. Let it get too low and it’s toast. Not cool.Years ago, put an Optima red top battery in a newer Jeep, and have been VERY happy with it. So, when the old Ford needed a new 6 volt battery, I was pleased to find that Optima made a battery for that too. Amazon has the best price anywhere ($115 SHIPPED!!) when I needed one, so eagerly ordered. Battery was shipped encapsulated in expando-foam inside a heavy duty cardboard box. VERY well packed, and arrived without a scratch. Was also surprised to see the manufacture date was only weeks before I got it. Nice and fresh!A little confusion as to where it was made. The battery says “Made in U.S.A.” on the case, yet there was a cheesy looking sticker on top that said “Made in Mexico”. Well, that was easy, just peeled off the sticker, and Whalla!! Made in USA.The Ford Model A battery tray is under the driver’s side floorboard, and the stock batteries are a pain in the neck (and back, arms, hands, etc.) to replace. The Optima battery is much lighter and smaller than the stock batteries and easily fits in the tray with room to spare. In fact, way too much room to spare. Had to find a solution to hold it on the tray and keep it from falling out of the car. Ended up buying the nice bracket made just for mounting Optima batteries in Model A’s, available from Brattons. The Optima battery starts the car with ease. People that have heard a 6 volt car crank over know the labored sounding cranking speed well. The Optima 6 volt battery cranks the car over almost like a 12 volt car! It really has no trouble at all starting the car, and you can even start the car with the lights on!The Optima says 800 CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) while the stock battery says 600 CCA, so there is a big difference right there. Odd since the Optima is so much smaller than the flooded batteries.Without a doubt, the Optima battery is the best upgrade done to the old car so far. Worth every cent and then some. No longer have to worry about, “Will the car start??” One less thing to worry about!!

After many years of operating and maintaining my personal trucks, automobiles, and tractors, I have determined that Optima batteries are the most rugged, most reliable, longest lasting batteries on the market. The manufacturer should make a greater effort to reduce the price of Optima batteries, thereby increasing market penetration. The variety and applicability should be expanded… for example, a smaller version of the 12 volt battery should be developed for lawn tractors. Conventional Lawn Tractor batteries are notoriously short-lived due to constant vibration and mechanical shock during use. An Optima spiral wound version at reduced size and cost would be ideally suited for Lawn Tractor use. The concept would likely be beneficial in the applications of trail-bikes, four-wheelers, etc.Expanding applicability, reducing price, and increasing market penetration will be key to the survival of the Optima Battery line. Let’s hope the parent company heeds this advice to ensure that this magnificent product continues to be available in the future.

vw 6v systems are old and very full of years of resistance. This battery cranks thru all that and makes the vehicle perform like it should – good cranking power / fits under the seat as factory intended. and no leaks! so you wont get a rusty pan like all the rest of them.Fantastic upgrade – worth the price.

Just replaced one of these batteries in a 1958 Farmall 130. It never leaked and corroded my battery box, and it lasted 13 years. Expensive, yes, but I’m sold.
