There comes a time when you notice that turning the ignition key no longer launches the starter eagerly into action, but instead it reacts like asking your spouse to take out the garbage; it gets done but not without a flash of pained grimaces and a lethargic shuffle with shoulders stooped and an air of martyrdom. There’s still some juice left in there but you know its past it’s bloom of youth. If you don’t want to find yourself pleading with passers-by with your jumper cables in hand one cold morning or waiting for the triple-A guy to show up hours later to help you get mobile again, you know it’s time to replace your battery. Optima batteries have a reputation as the Clidesdales of the battery world, used in applications where reliability and extra power are needed; i.e., a car with lots of amplifiers in the sound system or extra fog lights or a power winch. (as in SUV or Jeep) Something to do with using 100% copper in the plates which are wound concentrically instead of laid out in a sandwich-like grid, which increases the surface area of exposed copper. (Thus the round cylinders visible in their body.) My car has a tight, high compression sports car engine and living in a hot climate means the air conditioner is engaged also all the time putting more strain for the battery to pull at start-up. When I push the start button now, my car literally snaps into action in a millisecond, there’s so much extra power reserve. The dimensions are also smaller than the OEM battery so there’s extra room in the engine bay for cooling air flow under there. From all I’ve read and my own experience, I highly recommend this to replace your OEM battery. As for your spouse, you’ll just have to work things out or produce less garbage.

Update on Optima. Maybe I was too harsh. After recharging I have had no more problems. Perhaps a fluke? Or Optima batteries handle deep discharge well and shrug it off as long as you recharge in parallel as I described. The problem with the Prius though is that it uses relatively few amps to start the car, so the battery could be toast and still work. I have no way to load test the battery – we’ll see over the next several months! Below was my original review:I loved this battery for my 2008 Prius – the original 12V battery was complete junk. Plus, the OEM battery had narrower posts than normal US car batteries so you have to adapt the Optima. The ground strap I bought from Sears for like $10 – just a normal battery ground cable. The positive terminal is more complicated on the Prius though, that took some clever adapting. I basically took apart the prius connector and bolted on a standard size battery connector, then reassembled. There is of course a kit to make this easier. However, 2 years after purchase, the battery died. Dead. My charger said it was shorted (it wasn’t) and the Prius built in charger dumped like a 100A into it, according to my add on computer thingy. The Optima got very hot so I took it out and tried parallel charging it with another normal car battery, based on advice from Optima. This seems to have resurrected the battery but Amazon kindly sent me a new one anyway. Apparently the Optima design is a little different and when deeply discharged they act a little weird.I don’t know if the old battery really died but I can’t strongly recommend a $150 battery if it dies after two years. And the Prius is notorius for killing its 12v battery. I don’t think it really ever fully charges the thing. If your car is going to sit for more than 3 or 4 days consider either charging the 12v up to full with external charger or at least turn off the smart key thing. But maybe the Optima is an amazing battery for surviving a deep discharge? Not a plug and play option for the Prius however.

I still think the brand is one of the best ones on the Market. Most of our batteries fail because of short driving distances that fails to maintain a good charge. Over time, the battery just degrades regardless of whether it is AGM or traditional lead acid.If you contact Amazon regarding this, you will most likely get an unwanted answer. Apparently, there is a special automotive department within Amazon that handles these claims and chances are, you will not reach them on your first shot. If you are starting to have issues with warranty purchased from Amazon, here’s what I ended up doing..1) if you own a charger that is specifically for AGM, try charging it first. The problem is, most of us don’t own a battery tester that checks for Cold Cranking Amps…. I charged my with an Optima Charger and the CCA was at 50 (original should be 475 or something.. it is marked on your battery)2) Contact Optima at [email protected] and inform them about your battery issues.3) This is the most difficult part of a warranty unless you own multiple cars… Optima will need you to take that fail battery to an authorized facility to run a report on the battery. For me, I took it to Advance Auto Part and they will print out a receipt of the status of the battery.4) send that receipt and a copy of the amazon purchase to Optima.5) in my case, they issued a full refund to my account. As you can see, this warranty is very impractical for many of us. I am fortunate to own a charger, a tester and multiple vehicles to make this work. Otherwise, I would highly recommend that you try to get this at your local shop since exchanges are so much easier.

My last one lasted over 6 years so it was easy for me to decide to buy another.

I chose to buy an optima battery because at lithium wasn’t available also the lithium is almost twice the price . It fits And it works so far I should have gotten the D51R but I made the D51 fit just fine now it’s just a matter of longevity.

The negative post came lose DUE to no fault of mine and the advertised two year warranty has not been honored while receiving extremely poor and apathetic customer service. I have heard many other similar complaints of this same defect so optima is clearly knowingly redistributing damaged products without a return as a possible option. Pathetic company to say the least.
