After driving my wife’s car for a while, I became quite jealous of her backup camera and set out to install one in my 2013 Ford Focus ST. I was also jealous of the way her car displayed the rear view camera for five or six seconds after shifting out of reverse. This is important in a manual transmission car as you often pop it out of reverse while still backing up.While installing my backup camera, I added this to the signal wire (tapped from the reverse light) to create that OEM delay. This relay strikes me as a little expensive, but it works great.

Worked great, just as advertised….if they look at their reviews, they need to provide a small schematic for the very specific wiring connections that need to be made; unlike normal relays this is like older German relays for flashers that must have specific voltage, positive or ground, on specific terminals for it to work at all. The timer inside, must have a positive and a negative on specific terminals or it will not latch, and that makes it a positive trigger only relay. So if you have a negative trigger switch, you will have to use another relay to change the trigger polarity. They could show this with a simple block diagram and a few words….and found other people with same comment on Google, but they mentioned positive battery feed placement, but not that negative also had to be on a specific terminal also, otherwise would be 5 stars.

I would have given this product 5 stars, but I had to spend an unusually long time tracking down a wiring diagram. In case anyone is wondering: #30 – Constant 12V+ from Batt #31 – Batt Negative #87 – Normally Open Output #87a – Normally Closed Output #15 – 12V+ Relay Tirigger.Putting 12V+ on pin #15 will activate the relay coil and connect pin #87 to pin #30. When power is removed from pin #15, the relay coil will remain engaged and the adjustable timer starts. When the timer runs out, the relay coil is turned off and pin #30 switches back to pin #87a.

The Hella 996152131 Delay on-release timer relay worked like it should, deactivates pin 87 after X seconds.Pinout:15 – 12V trigger30 – 12V constant power (battery or ignition)31 – ground87 – NO 12V output (delay off)87a – NC 12V output (off when timer active, on when deactivated)Application used: heated mirrorsI was able to use a factory momentary switch (ground breaking) to control a “trigger” relay that I wired to the 15 pin on the timer relay. Moderately simple to wire, similar to a standard relay with a trigger instead of a switched coil voltage. The 30 pin handles the coil and high current voltage. The function of this relay is delay on-release, meaning once the timer is triggered (power applied then released), the 87 pin will stay energized until relay times out. If you trigger the timer again, the timer resets to 0s and keeps 87 energized for the set time. If you need to deenergize before the timer ends, add a switch to the ground of the relay, this will cut the coil power and deactivate the timer.Price is a bit high for a non-solid state relay, but it was functional for my application.Note: Initially ordered from Amazon Warehouse Deals and the package I received was the incorrect relay (standard 5 pin relay), returned and repurchased from Amazon.com for about $20 more. When second one arrived, it was the correct Hella timer relay.

Had to look up other reviews for wiring instructions but once I figured it out it worked first time. I put a new satellite ready radio in my 2003 Ram and it takes 20-25 seconds to restart when you go from “ON” to “ACC” losing continuity with whatever you’re listening to. Very aggravating. No more! Moving the key results in continuous operation. It also results in the radio playing for 2-1/2 seconds after turning the key “OFF”. No biggie; I am happy.

Product was reputed well for name and quality. Tested it and worked. However, website was not clear on delay on, which led me to think it would turn on after timer is set. Realized that it meant to be delay on then turn off after specific time set. Nothing wrong with the product and does not meet my project need.

Relay will fail to turn on at all when exposed to high under hood temperatures. This is a massive oversight as one of its most useful features is to keep the electric fan running for a bit after shutdown.

The relay was unusable. It was dead on arrival. Wouldn’t work no matter what I tried.
